Do you want to hit the ball longer and straighter or do you just want to be more consistent? Well these are the questions that most golfers I teach want answered and there are a variety of ways to go about giving the correct answer to each individual and that is because all golfers may have a different perspective as to how they think the golf swing should work. Many read books, look at videos and some have lessons and others are self taught by picking up a club at some stage and start playing.
I believe that there is no wrong information given by any golf professional but how that information is delivered and received may vary greatly. When you look at a picture it is two dimensional and therefore it can create an illusion of what is truly correct and the same may occur with video if the swing is not photographed either in a direct line behind or in front of the player. It is these deceptions that a golfer may try to incorporate into their swings and therefore can become a problem.
When you watch professional players the general comment is, ‘Wow, they make it look so easy’ and even when any golfer hits a good shot the same remark can be made. So why isn’t it easy all the time? Why is it you can hit a great shot one time and then the next is disastrous? It is difficult to be consistent because when you think of it every shot that we hit on the golf course is different. The ball is in a different situation, you will be using a different club and hitting a different distance. Most golfers hit the ball better on the golf range because some of these differences are eliminated, you use the same club, hit from the same lie and generally the distance is not so important let alone worrying if it will go into the water, trees or bunker. So there must be a way to navigate around the golf course without making so many mistakes and there must be a way of making adjustments for the variations that are encountered when playing.
What I teach is a basic method of five fundamental positions that will explain each and every golf shot that you hit. What I have found in my 35 years of teaching golf is that the moves themselves are very basic and easy to do but coordinating them is very difficult. If you have a correct understanding of the swing movements then you will improve your golf, hit it longer, straighter and be more consistent.
